Coughlin sought to plough the trough with the old tractor. He thought he was through the rough part when, suddenly, the engine hiccoughed, then died.

Dougherty watched. He had often fought with Coughlin over replacing tired machinery. Had he possessed enough dough, he would have bought a new, tougher tractor himself.

Thoroughly disgusted, Dougherty quit.
